(ii) Modern Slavery Statement

Modern slavery and human trafficking is incompatible with Brightening Lives Ltd's values, which include being caring and building trusting relationships that benefit everyone. We are committed to care, choice and independence. View our modern slavery policy below:

Brightening Lives Ltd - Modern Slavery Policy

Why is this helpful?

This describes Brightening Lives awareness of and commitment to challenging modern slavery. The UK Home Office describes Modern Slavery as ‘A broad term used to encompass the offence of slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking’.
This statement also describes our values in practice of:

Caring We put people at the centre of everything we do and treat everyone with kindness, dignity and respect.

Relationships We build trusting partnerships that benefit everyone.

Energy We never stop striving to improve ourselves and are passionate about enhancing other people’s lives.

    Who is this helpful to?

This statement is helpful to all our partners at Brightening Lives including people we support, family and friends, commissioners and everyone who works for or on behalf of Brightening Lives to help us achieve our mission.

      What to do.

When there are any concerns about someone being treated as a modern slave we will follow the guidance in the ‘what to do’ section in the Safeguarding Adults and Children policy - Keeping everybody safe’

Safeguarding means working together to stop abuse and prevent it happening in the future. Modern slavery is abuse and abuse is always wrong. No one should feel unsafe and have to live with abuse. This policy will help you safeguard adults and children from abuse and improper treatment and protect their human rights. You have a duty of care, a responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of the people we support.

Our safeguarding policy describes what action we must take to safeguard and promote the wellbeing of adults and children with care and support needs who are at risk of harm. It ensures we protect people’s right to live in safety and free from abuse.

Brightening Lives Ltd has a zero tolerance of abuse.

By recognising and reporting abuse you can help bring it to an end.

Brightening Lives will have a clear statement on our website about modern slavery.

Why you HAVE to do this.

Regulation 13 ‘Safeguarding Service Users from abuse and improper treatment’ as part of The Health & Social Care Act 2008 is current law and says that we have to do this. To meet the requirements of this regulation, Brightening Lives must have a zero tolerance approach to abuse, unlawful discrimination and restraint. This includes:

      - neglect
      - subjecting people to degrading treatment
      - unnecessary or disproportionate restraint
      - deprivation of liberty.

The law, the Modern Slavery Act 2015, tells us what our responsibilities are under this legislation and Brightening Lives will meet our legal and social responsibility to tackle this complex issue. Our awareness raising of this issue and what to do when we have concerns, will start in Brightening Lives induction for staff on how to recognise the signs of domestic abuse and slavery and will continue in refresher training on safeguarding.

Other things that might help you.

Our Safeguarding Adults and Children policy ‘Keeping everybody safe’ includes modern slavery and we understand we must be aware and act on any concerns we have about modern slavery as described in this policy

      Other laws including;

Children Act 1989, Children Act 2004, Children and Young Persons Act 1933, Equality Act 2010, Equality Act 2010: Chapter 1 (protected characteristics) Chapter 2 (prohibited conduct) and Chapter 3 (services and public functions), Human Rights Act 1998, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Mental Capacity Act Code of Practice, Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Health Act 2007 and Code of Practice, Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, Equality Act 2010 guidance, Guidance for service providers about their duties under the Equality Act 2010 (Equality and Human Rights Commission), Services, public functions and associations: Statutory Code of Practice (Equality and Human Rights Commission)
